Early enteral feeding using nasojejunal tube after gastric cancer surgery is safe and effective: a single unit experience from cancer hospital

Introduction: Patients are kept nil per oral (NPO) after surgery for gastric cancer and all patients receives intravenous fluids till feed is commenced. There established benefit of enteral nutrition cancer. Early feeding comes with lots hesitation execution, so to offer benefits early avoid feeding, nasojejunal tube (NJ) can be used as alternative jejunostomy (FJ) also total parenteral (TPN) avoided. The aim this study present our experience using NJ convey the message that safe, effective has less complications. Methods: This a retrospective operated between April 2019 March 2022, who had placed at time surgery. was in efferent limb jejunum. Feeding started from post operative day 1 gradually progressed over days. removed adequate intake. Results: Sixty were eligible final analysis. Median age 61 years, IQR (53-69). Thirty-three underwent D2-subtotal gastrectomy, 16 D2-total gastrectomy 10 gastro-jejunostomy. discharge 12 days, (12-14). median removal (9-12). Thirty-four reported complications related feed, minor easily manageable. Conclusion: offers advantages It technically easy use should advocated its simplicity, low costs great compared FJ TPN.
